I recently came across a suggestion by Robyn Pearce in a NZ Business magazine (May 2014) to not look at your email first thing in the morning - and rather to do 60-90 minutes of priority work, and then look at emails.
I tried this one day last week, and it was brilliant. However, the lure of the email is strong, and I haven't yet managed to repeat that trial. It's definitely worth trying if you're facing tight deadlines.
